Made with Intention: The Story Behind Every Handcrafted Portrait
There are three ways to make a photo portrait: fully automated, semi-automated with hand finishing, or a craftsman following the piece start to finish. Most “customized gifts” sold online are the first kind — upload, machine spits it out, and there is no “who” to know.
We chose the slowest route.
A portrait's four steps
Step one, photo preparation — done by hand, photo by photo: cut-out, crop, background, exposure and contrast. The rule is restoration, not beautification. Step two, layout — composing the photo's framing and proportions on the portrait, which determines the final look. Step three, imaging — we preserve your photo inside the glass, keeping its color and detail. Step four, hand finishing: polishing, cleaning, fitting the wooden base, and a final inspection.
There's no separate “QC stamp” step — because the person who watched this piece from raw photo to finished portrait is the person accountable for it.
Qian: the blessing hidden in every piece
Of the I Ching's 64 hexagrams, the fifteenth is Qian (Modesty): the mountain beneath the earth — carrying the weight of a mountain, yet placing itself below the ground. In the Chinese tradition it is the only hexagram with all six lines auspicious: humility, balance, good fortune.
Every portrait we make carries the spirit of Qian. That's not just a marketing story — it's a reminder of scale. What customers entrust to us is what they treasure most: a dog of fourteen years, a mother who passed, a newborn child. Treating those photos with humility is the only right posture for this work.
For our international friends, a simple reading: think of Qian as a quiet blessing — believed to bring clarity and positive energy. Gifting a piece that carries this meaning says one layer more than gifting something that's merely beautiful.
Why these details matter
Because nobody buying a memorial portrait is buying “a transparent slab with a photo in it.” They're buying the assurance that someone took their memory seriously. That's what handcraft means here: it turns care into something visible — something you can hold and weigh.
Every portrait: handcrafted by a master, carrying Qian's blessing. $329, worldwide in about 15–18 days.
